Why You Keep Chunking the Ball—and How to Fix It Fast

If you’ve ever taken a big swing, only to watch a chunk of grass fly farther than your golf ball... you’re not alone. "Chunking" the ball—where your club hits the ground before the ball—is one of the most frustrating mistakes in golf. The good news? It’s totally fixable.

Why You're Chunking the Ball
There are three common reasons golfers chunk the ball:

Poor weight shift – If your weight stays on your back foot during your swing, your low point moves behind the ball, leading to fat shots.
Early release – Letting your wrists unhinge too early causes the club to bottom out too soon.
Ball position – Having the ball too far forward in your stance with irons leads to inconsistent contact and chunked shots.
Easy Fixes to Stop Chunking
Drill: Front Foot Only Swings
Try hitting half-swings with your back foot pulled behind you. This forces your weight forward and teaches proper contact.
Use a towel behind the ball
Place a towel 4–6 inches behind your ball on the range. If you hit the towel, you chunked it. Train yourself to miss the towel.
Check your setup
Your ball should be in the middle of your stance for short irons and just slightly forward for mid-irons. Keep your hands ahead of the ball.
